We've had a ball romping up and down the country and into Canada so far this year. Thanks to all who have come to shows or picked up our new "Rough Carpenters" album on Thrill Jockey. Reception for the record has been a little overwhelming, with NPR listing it last winter as one of their most-anticipated releases for 2013 and the BBC calling it our "smoothest ride yet" and "at the top of their game." We sure appreciate everyone who's given it a listen.
We don't usually talk about fiddlers convention contests here, but placing in the old-time band competition at Mount Airy this year was mind-blowing. It's a festival we've attended for years and years and placing there is such an honor. We'll brag on Nathan taking second in the old-time banjo contest there as well. Good times.
Our trip to Canada at the start of the summer for the Suoni Per Il Popolo fest and the Montreal Folk Festival was an amazing experience too, and we hope to see you all again soon. This fall we're bound back to Chicago and Minnesota, and for the first time over into South Dakota -- in the company of the wonderful Charlie Parr, which makes it that much sweeter. We'll be reprising the Parr/Twigs "barnstorming demonstrations" tour of five years back, and no doubt playing lots of songs from Glory in the Meeting House, the lp/cd we did with Charlie a few years back.
We're heading back to the UK in October, and also over to Ireland for shows in the north and south. We look forward to seeing friends in England again, and as for Ireland....look out! Mike has played solo shows and duos with Cara there, but this will be the first time the Twigs have ventured across the Irish Sea. Check the shows page or the Black Twig Facebook page for details.
At home, we're playing the dances at Floyd Country Store regularly and holding down our monthly bar gig at the Cellar, where we're delighted to welcome occasional special guests. And Mike, Nathan and Isak have been playing solo shows locally and out around the country and overseas. And Sally has been touring with the Freight Hoppers and calling dances. It's a hot summer, definitely.
First mention, of course, goes to "Rough Carpenters," our newest and best album to date. We have copies available at shows, so come pick up a stack.
And we still have some T-shirts and koozies featuring Sally's picture of a banjo-playing squirrel, along with the few remaining copies of "Yellow Cat," a 7-inch record that Thrill Jockey released for last year's Record Store Day.
Nathan has a solo banjo album, "A Bottle, a Buckeye," that you'll want to think about. And Mike has a brand new solo fiddle and banjo (and shruti box!) album titled "Poplar Hollow."
Over at Thrill Jockey, you can find downloads on their FINA site, as well as limited numbers of cd and vinyl copies of our 2010 album "Ironto Special" and more.
And last, even though we no longer have copies of some earlier Black Twig Pickers releases (the ones listed out of stock here at Klang), you likely still can get a very reasonable deal on them here or here.
Thanks everybody, and enjoy the summer --
