Black Twig Pickers, Red Cabin: Farewell Dolphin hoot tonight (and Newport Fest tomorrow)
Black Twig Pickers play out the old Green Dolphin tonight, Aug. 31, in Roanoke, Va., starting at 9 or maybe before and continuing 'til early in the a.m. After a years-long run as a classic beer joint, fish stand and venue for a zillion punks and rockers, and the not-so-occasional wandering stringband, the Dolphin's calling it quits, with new owners apparently getting the keys Saturday. Black Twigs are playing all night to close an era.
And Saturday, Sept. 1, is Newport Fest, that free-camping, free-music, free-everything free-for-all of beer, roast pig, and sound out Va. 42 across from the Newport fire station. Red Cabin takes the stage at 4 p.m., Black Twigs at 7 or 8 p.m.
Bring some vegetarian food and feed the masses, or just come out and enjoy --
