The Black Twig Rheostatic Ramblers take to the airwaves on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. on WPAQ Mount Airy, N.C. Hear it all at 740 on your AM dial.

Or if you're near Mount Airy, stop in at the Merry-Go-Round theater downtown and witness the action in person. The Twigs (and others) will be playing on stage, Clyde will doing the commercials from a table on the side, about 30 pickers will be picking away in the upstairs lobby by the bathroom, and there'll be more hooting and hollering than seems reasonable for that time of day.

And mark the Winter Solstice on Wednesday, Dec. 21, with the Mikel Dimmick Spiral Joy Band at a 9 p.m. or so show at the Plophouse in Blacksburg, Va. A wake for the dying sun king, a fading trail of sparks above the frozen ground, long shadows beneath the moon.
